Tenoch (Tenochian: Rock Cactus), named after both its first king and the rock formations reminiscent of cacti encountered by its first inhabitants upon arriving at the Hannuan Peninsula, also known as Deshret Remet (The land of the Red Men) by Hannuans, is a kingdom and country in the Far South of the Old Continent.
Geography[]
Tenoch borders Hannu to the southeast, the Sea of Division to the east, the Sea of Hourglass to the northwest, and western Melukka to the north. The terrain of Tenoch is predominantly flat, especially in the region bordering Hannu. This flat landscape extends across much of Tenoch, contributing to its expansive arid plains. While most of Tenoch's territory is flat, the landscape features some hills and mountains, which are relatively small compared to those in other regions. These elevated areas, though modest in size, provide unique ecological niches and potential sites for mineral extraction.
The kingdom derives its name from distinctive rock formations that resemble cacti, a significant landmark for the first settlers. These rock formations are prevalent throughout the region, particularly in the northern parts of the country, and are a notable feature of the Tenochian landscape. These formations also play a role in the local ecosystem by affecting wind patterns and providing microhabitats for various species.
The proximity to the Sea of Division to the east and the Sea of Hourglass to the northwest provides Tenoch with vital water resources, although the country itself is largely arid. These seas are crucial for trade, transportation, and fishing, supporting the local economy and connecting Tenoch with neighboring regions. The coastal areas are dotted with ports and fishing villages that thrive on maritime activities.
Climate[]
Tenoch, similar to Hannu, experiences an arid climate with scarce rainfall. The flat plains are characterized by harsh desert conditions, with extreme temperatures and minimal vegetation. Summers are scorching with temperatures often exceeding 40°C (104°F), while winters, though milder, can still be quite cool at night. The coastal areas along the Sea of Division and the Sea of Hourglass experience slightly milder climates due to the moderating influence of the water bodies. These areas benefit from occasional sea breezes that can alleviate the heat and contribute to a more temperate environment suitable for agriculture and human habitation.
Economy and Trade[]
Due to the arid conditions, agriculture is limited but possible in areas where irrigation is feasible, particularly near the rock formations which can sometimes store and channel water. The availability of groundwater in these areas has allowed for the development of small-scale farming, producing crops such as dates, barley, and certain hardy vegetables. Additionally, livestock farming, particularly of goats and camels, is a significant part of the rural economy, providing meat, milk, and hides.
The Seas of Division and Hourglass are vital for Tenoch's fishing industry and maritime trade. The rich marine biodiversity of both seas supports a thriving fishing sector, with catches including various species of fish, shellfish, and other seafood. The kingdom engages in commerce with Hannu to the southeast, as well as with other regions such as Melukka, Barsa, and occasionally the Nilfgaardian Empire due to its proximity to Barsa, leveraging its strategic coastal position. Trade goods include agricultural products, fish, minerals, and other products such artisanal crafts unique to Tenoch.
The rock formations of the country also serve as a resource for building materials and minerals, contributing to the local economy. Quarrying these rocks provides materials for construction and sculpture, while mining activities in the hills yield minerals such as iron, copper and tin, which are essential for local industries and trade.
The shared border with Hannu facilitates cultural exchange and trade, with the navigable rivers of Hannu providing essential routes for commerce between the two nations. The rivers enable the transport of goods such as grains, textiles, and luxury items, fostering economic interdependence and cultural ties. River transport is often more efficient and cost-effective than overland travel, especially for bulk goods.
The majority of Tenoch's population is concentrated along the coasts of the Sea of Division and the Sea of Hourglass, where fishing and trade offer sustenance and economic opportunities. These coastal settlements are bustling hubs of activity, featuring markets, docks, and various businesses that cater to both local needs and international trade, with ships regularly departing for distant markets. These ports are equipped with facilities for loading and unloading cargo, repair docks, and marketplaces where merchants from various regions converge.
Inland, settlements are sparse and typically centered around oases or areas where the rock formations provide natural resources or shelter. These inland communities are often smaller and more isolated, relying on traditional methods of water conservation and agriculture.
Tenoch's flat terrain allows for relatively easy overland travel and trade routes extending from Hannu and beyond. Caravan routes crisscross the country, connecting remote areas with major trade centers and facilitating the movement of goods and people. These routes are essential for the distribution of agricultural products, minerals, and other commodities.
Demographics[]
Tenochians are closely related to both the Skrælings populations in the Far North and the people of the Apumayu Basin. Despite this common heritage, the Tenochians have evolved distinct characteristics over centuries of adapting to their challenging environment. One of the most notable features of the Tenochians is their deep reddish-brown skin. This unique skin coloration is a direct adaptation to the intense sun exposure and extreme temperatures of their arid environment. The pigmentation provides an effective natural protection against the harsh UV rays, reducing the risk of sunburn and skin damage.
Additionally, Tenochians are distinguished by their prominent noses and high cheekbones as well being robust in build. The prominent noses are thought to aid in filtering and conditioning the dry, dusty air typical of the desert climate, while high cheekbones provide added protection against the harsh sun and wind. These physical traits enhance the Tenochians' ability to cope with their environment, allowing them to maintain comfort and functionality despite the severe conditions.
As already mentioned, the population of Tenoch is relatively sparse, with the majority residing in the coastal regions where the climate is more temperate and economic opportunities are more abundant. The inland areas are less populated due to the challenging conditions and limited resources. Like in Hannu, population in the coastal areas is more diverse due to trade interactions. But the two main ethnic groups of the country are the Tenochians and the population living in the frontier with Hannu, result of the mixing between Tenochians and Hannuans.
History[]
TBA
With a richer history than it appears, this kingdom was founded by migrants from the Apumayu Basin region at some point during the 8th century after being expelled from Awak for religious reasons.
Although they maintain similarities with their southern ancestors, eventually, interaction with their neighbouring countries made them into something different over time.
Culture[]
Use of magic[]
The use of magic, unlike in Hannu, is legal for everyone, it is taught at the Chicomotoz school, both for boys and girls. And likewise, in so many other places, things like the Goetia are prohibited. Although no, necromancy, as long as it is put to a positive use. Mages of Tenoch, can be seen as advisers, not only in their country, but also in other regions, highlighting their presence, in the so-called Free Lands.
Slavery[]
Slavery is not something common in Tenoch. But depending on the crime, it can happen. Although only, for the duration of the punishment for the criminal.
Sports[]
Sports are highly valued in Tenochian culture, one of them being gladiatorial combat. In fact, the vast majority of disputes are usually resolved through sport. Judges in Tenoch act as referees, rather than as judges are understood in other parts of the world. And what we mean by a lawyer in the Northern Kingdoms is more like a secondary referee than a lawyer as such.
Military[]
Because there has hardly been any conflict with the other neighbouring countries, the Tenochians do not have an "army" as such, but a system inherited from their ancestors and influenced by the Hannu Mejays. Which could remind us of the system of Knights Errant protecting the Duchy of Toussaint.
This has led, at some points in its history, to having puppet governments, because they would not be able to cope with such a threat from an invader. A notable example of this was the puppet government, which caused the destruction of the School of the Rhino.
These are the so-called Jaguar Knights in Nilfgaardian sources A group of elite monks - warriors who wear armour in honour of the Desert Jaguar. Animal which represents its goddess, Ix Chel, which is said to have guided the ancestors of the Tenochians to their present home. Less competent than a witcher, somewhat more competent than a Mejay. They act, like them, as a security force, taking down criminals and thugs. They also solve crimes when they happen, and patrol both land and sea borders.
During the time of existence of the Rhino witchers, used to collaborate with them, if the case involved monsters and human crimes together. Some of these warriors occasionally travel outside their territory, especially to measure their capabilities against others. As Jaguar Knights have been seen in the Nilfgaardian fighting arenas. In fact, the witcher known as Cervin is said to have faced the legendary Cuato during his time as a gladiator.
Religion[]
The people of Tenoch worship a variety of gods. Their main religion is Purepecha beliefs. But other religions, exported from regions with which they have had fluid trade, have made their presence felt. Such as the Brahmoism ( From Melukka ) and the Aslina ( From Sunda )
Architecture[]
Tenoch's architecture is reminiscent of that of the ancestors of the Tenochian in Apumayu Basin, but with noticeable influences from neighbouring countries, especially Hannu and Sunda.
Hygiene[]
Latrines are a common sight in Tenochian domestic buildings. In Zuma all houses have ceramic toilets. Some houses in Cixo feature privies with ceramic toilets, which are connected to a small chamber with a stone-lined clean out window to the outside and a brick ventilation flue. Biconical pieces of clay serve as the equivalent as a cleaning medium.
Role of women[]
Tenochian society is matrilineal and women enjoyed a high social standing, but not as much as in places like Zerrikania, but neither are they considered second-class citizens.
Non - humans[]
The presence of non-humans in Tenoch is almost non-existent, with the exception of the Rhino witchers, who enjoyed a certain respect despite everything.
