The term "Southern Kingdoms" has different meanings:
In Nordling historiography, the term Southern Kingdoms refers to the Nilfgaardian provinces south of the Northern Kingdoms during their period as independent realms, such as Gemmeria or Metinna.
In Nilfgaardian historiography, it references the Barsamen kingdoms known as taifas that once encompassed part of the vast Barsa region and part of present-day Lower Alba, more specifically to the ones located south of the Ardawanne Mountains, with a few exceptions. This term was used, especially before and during the period known as The Reconquest, when the future empire engaged in conflict with these kingdoms during its initial expansion.
