Selkies ( Sylkies in Vinland Jargon and Skellige Jargon and selchies in Elder Speech ) are a subspecies of the merpeople and Sea Witches capable of polymorphism, changing from siren, to seal to human form.

Unlike the merpeople or Sea Witches, selkies are always women.

Their role in the society of the sea is unknown, but some scholars say that they may be explorers of the surface world.

Physiology

Selkies have three different forms which are affected by the presence of the their seal skin cloak:

1. Without their seal skin cloaks, a Selkie is essentially human and highly vulnerable.
2. If they wrap it around their waist and submerge themselves in water, then their lower half turns into the lower half of a seal allowing them to move at high speeds in the water, their eyes turn dark-like a seal and will develop sharp teeth, their hands will develop webbing between fingers and the fingernails will lengthen into claws.
3. If they wrap it around their neck or drape it over their head and submerge themselves in water, the selkie will become a full seal.

  • Supernatural Beauty: Selkies are generally considered to possess a beauty that surpasses the boundaries of nature.

Marriage Customs

Selkies have rules about marriage customs especially with human males, if a pure-hearted human male returns their magical coat the Selkie becomes engaged to them, a Selkie will then later return to engage in the human's engagement custom if they accept 'the proposal', such as presenting a ring.
