Remus also known as The Grey Wolf, was a witcher of the School of the Wolf, having been trained at Kaer Morhen around the same time as Geralt, Eskel and the others from the tenth generation. He was a great friend of the older witcher Berengar, the loss of Remus was one of the motivators for this witcher to go rogue and join forces with Salamandra.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Very little is known about Remus's life before his arrival at Kaer Morhen. Due to his tender age of five when he was brought to the fortress for training and eventual transformation into a witcher, Remus himself retained few memories of his early years. The scant information available suggests a probable birthplace in Kaedwen, specifically in the Vattweir region, inferred from the style of clothing he wore upon his arrival at the School of the Wolf fortress.

The eight generation of School of the Wolf Witchers[]

As a member of the eight generation of the School of the Wolf, Remus underwent rigorous training and mutations alongside notable figures like Geralt and Eskel. However, unlike his more outgoing peers, Remus was characterized as a shy, withdrawn, fearful, and highly sensitive child. These traits made the demanding training even more challenging for him compared to others of his generation.

During this period, Remus formed a significant bond with a witcher named Berengar. Berengar, recognizing Remus's struggles, became a mentor and confidant, helping him navigate the challenges and barriers of his training. Together, they forged a strong friendship that went beyond the confines of their shared profession.

Despite his initial difficulties, Remus began to overcome his fears and insecurities with Berengar's guidance. The older witcher's mentorship played a pivotal role in Remus's development, enabling him to progress in his training and emerge as a skilled and capable witcher.

Interestingly, during the mutation process, many of the older witchers believed that Remus would not survive and even made monetary bets on it. Only Vesemir and Berengar were confident that he would survive, and indeed he did, thus proving the doubters wrong and continuing his training.

Regarding how he got along with his classmates, Remus did not make many friends during his training due to his aforementioned shy nature. Like Geralt, he got along poorly with Clovis, but with the rest, there was a certain respect. He had a connection, not quite friendship but almost, with Eskel, and a similar connection existed with another witcher of a previous generation, Adalwulf of Aedirn. But his only true friend, as mentioned before, was Berengar.

Witcher Tournament (mid-12th century)[]

In his later training, Remus would participate in the Witcher Tournament alongside several other witchers from his school, including the future famous White Wolf. When the event turned violent, Remus survived thanks to the sacrifice of two witchers from the School of the Fox, Lars of Magne and Zebaak, who allowed him to escape along with Eskel and another witcher from a different school.

Death at the claws of the Striga of Temeria, Adda the Red ( 1251)[]

In 1251, a year before the famous White Wolf lifted the curse afflicting Foltest's daughter, Remus traveled to Temeria, accepting the contract issued by the Temerian Crown. However, he believed that the curse that had befallen Adda was a vukodlak, a type of curse related to lycanthropy, rather than a striga. Ill-prepared and mistaken, Remus tragically lost his life during the hunt.

Personality[]

Remus's reserved nature, stemming from the forced suppression of his high sensitivity as a child, earned him the reputation of being a quiet and almost cold individual among other Wolf Witchers. This demeanor led to his nickname, "The Grey Wolf." He was a man of few words, choosing to express himself sparingly. However, each time he did speak, his words resonated with a depth of understanding and sagacity that commanded attention. While his peers often boasted about their exploits and reveled in their prowess, Remus remained introspective, quietly observing and learning from both successes and failures. However, this wasn't sufficient when he faced Adda The White.

Trivia[]

  • In the Common Fanon, unlike in Gwent, it is he who is killed by the Striga and not Brehen.
    • This was done because of the potential Brehen has and for taking advantage of and developing this character. In case someone from CD Projekt Red saw this and wanted to include him in The Witcher 1 Remake. It was also done to better justify Berengar's actions and not that he simply became evil, because he hated the witcher life. If that were the case, Berengar would have retired like other witchers. Remus' death could serve as a better catalyst for him to appreciate his life as a witcher and his loss, an ideal motive to take revenge on Kaer Morhen.
